Boyle Heights is a Los Angeles neighborhood, located just east of downtown between the Los Angeles River and the city boundary. One of the oldest areas developed in L.A, Boyle Heights has always been a melting pot of Latinos, Asian, African Americans, and Jewish families. It is the “Ellis Island of the West Coast” in the 1930’s. Everyone kept their different cultures and lived well together. Deli’s, Sushi, Hispanic foods, exist side by side.

Boyle Heights is filled with people who have come to Los Angeles from different cities, states, and countries, with different beliefs and traditions, languages. Avenida Cesar E. Chavez was formerly Brooklyn Avenue. The street runs along 2 miles to greater East LA. So many different cultures have intersected here. 10 minutes from Downtown LA and surrounded by intersecting freeways, Boyle Heights has a rich history.

At one time it was more run down. Now 4th generation kids who grew up here are coming back and improving the area. You can’t leave the neighborhood without sampling good food. Mariachi Plaza and Evergreen Cemetery are landmarks.

New Developments are starting to come. Houses are being refurbished. The diverse culture and spirit will be maintained and enhanced.
